Put Solar On It!

Foothill Transit is dedicated to responsible stewardship of our environment through innovative solutions like solar power.

Sunday is National Solar Day.

This coming Sunday, June 21 many Americans will participate in the Second Annual National #PutSolarOnIt Day of Action to recognize the growth of solar power across the United States. Here at Foothill Transit, we’ve been celebrating solar energy every day for years!

At Foothill Transit, we embrace sustainability. It’s true that it benefits all aspects of our business. But it’s also our responsibility to care for the communities we live and work in. As the primary public transit provider in the San Gabriel and Pomona valleys, we know our actions have a big effect on our quality of life and our environment.

We’re always on the lookout for sustainable, innovative solutions that improve our environmental performance. That’s why both of Foothill Transit’s operations and vehicle maintenance facilities – or “bus yards” – are outfitted with solar panels that provide a supplemental source of electricity. The panels were installed with the help of the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act in 2011. They would have been installed at our administrative offices in West Covina, too, but we found we didn’t have enough roof space!

Since then, we estimate that the panels have helped us cut our energy costs by over 15%. They’ve been very easy to maintain; we simply wash them down several times a year.

You can watch how much energy these panels are producing in real-time by clicking on the Pomona Yard Solar Power Meter or the Arcadia Yard Solar Power Meter.
